The best tip I can give is that one needs to block high and left/center. The one handed spear overhead reaches over shields in the game so you actually need to look at your character and see if they're properly covering themselves.
Aim away from the spearman if you have to in order to get your weapon to block where it is going to come from, and regain the initiative by blocking their hits. Do not open yourself to a full stamina spearman cause that's when weapons charge speed massively and the jabs will seem like insanely fast strikes specially at high ranks where they have full weapon skill. This goes for lots of enemies in the game.
If you properly cover yourself it literally can't do anything because it has no swipes or way to mix you up. I have never seen the NPCs go for the legs, and the spear moveset is so one-dimensional they can't possibly get in if you don't let them.
All you need to do is get in close and repeatedly bash their head in. You might take a few points of damage but it should be an easy win 1-on-1.
If you dont want to cheese. Normally when they attack, (facing them) their left side is exposed to a Downward right swing. Shoulder to foot. This goes for most shields
spearmen are by far the easiest to deal with, second only to 2handed foes
Also - anyone else find they have to reposition their shield block each time they strike - i assume it is deliberate but annoying when you are holding block and it hasn't blocked at all.
I did. It makes no sense to me because if I run in the A.I just hits me regardless, and the spear guy 99% of the time has a bigass shield to hide behind.
No cheese: If you want a more standard fight with less cheddar in it, fight him up close and keep moving to the right. Never letting him get far enough away to get a good poke in. Guard up in close, step back swing, get back in his grill and circle right until stam up. Rinse and repeat. It will be more of a fight and you have to be quick on the shield as spears are very fast and it can be a challenge.
