Stuck with Astrid/Giovanni Quest -- Have Read Other Threads

I've played through the game before, so I remember a bit of how things should go, and I also searched here to see if others had run into the same problem; for others, simply visiting Iwashima seems to solve the problem, but that isn't working for me.

My problem is that I happened to be at Iwashima Countryside when I received Olga's first letter about Giovanni suggesting he might be found there. I had just returned to the ship from the island when the mailbox lit up.

I opened and read the letter, but Astrid didn't come to speak to me. I found her and spoke to her, but she didn't mention Giovanni. I took the ship for a bit of a spin and returned to the island, but still nothing. I went onto the island again and spoke to the spitters on the bridge, but their dialog was still about spitting and there was no difference in Astrid upon my return.

I then sailed to another island (Hoseki Quarry) to which I hadn't been previously, mined there, then returned to Iwashima, and still, I can't get either Astrid or the spitters on the bridge to talk about Giovanni.

I've opened my inventory and re-read the letter a couple of times as well, but that doesn't seem to be working either.

Any idea what I could do to progress at this point?

Well fudge. That's a borked save for me then.
