There's no easy way to check from in-game that I'm aware of, other than checking for some of the added elements - for example, if you have a kitchen, checking the recipe list should show a distinctive silhouette of a winged insect on a stick among the dishes if you have the Farewell Edition (or later). The big, obvious sign that you've got a recent version is the presence of Overbrook near Oxbury, but you need to get pretty far through the game to reach Oxbury, so that's only really useful if you have a late-game save (or are prepared to replay the game to find out) - and I forget whether you needed to do more than load your old save to get Overbrook on the map - its presence is definitive, but its absence may not be - revisiting Oxbury and Overbrook still not being on the map when you get back to the boat is probably good enough.
