How did each character die?
Just wondering how each character died, one of the devs made a comment that one of the characters had cancer, just curious how they all met their demise

I have no idea on a few, spoilers in case.

Alice (hedgehog): I think old age and alzheimer's.
Astrid (lynx): I think old age? Not sure.
Bruce and Mickey (hummingbird and bull): Mickey was in the hospital and possibly died from his injuries. Bruce I'm not sure?
Giovanni (lion) I think he died in the war, however I'm not sure?
Gustav (bird): I have no idea honestly.
Gwen (deer): I think she killed herself? otherwise not sure?
Stanley (mushroom): I think he fell into a coma? His mom was abusive towards him I think? So she could be what killed him. I assume he was taken off life support?
Summer (snake): She died because of cancer, due to chemicals from a previous job she left.

Alice I think simply died of natural causes. Her story ended with her showing clear signs of dementia, as she couldn’t remember who Stella was or even what period of time she was in. Her old age was likely catching up with her, and it was just her time to go.

Meanwhile, Bruce and Mikey probably have the most straightforward explanation: they were both members of the mafia, and one night, Mikey accidentally drove his car off a bridge while drunk. While he didn’t drown, he was put into a six month coma before finally succumbing to his condition; and Bruce committed suicide shortly after.

Gustav seems to have suffered some illness that paralyzed more and more of his body. I guess it eventually killed him.
I read about some famous scientist who suffered from this one, but I don't remember the name.

You're thinking of Stephen Hawking, and yeah, seems like ALS....oof

Some of them are hinted at or outright mentioned in the game, but the artbook covers most of them.

Gwen: Lung cancer. She did consider suicide but Stella talked her out of it.
Atul: Disappeared without a trace, ultimate fate unknown.
Summer: Metastaic breast cancer, probably caused by a combination of familial predisposition (since she mentions her father fought the dragon) and chemical exposure from her old job.
Alice: Dementia. The artbook states that she was the first patient that died while Stella was nursing her.
Astrid: Old age.
Giovanni: Heart attack.
Gustav: Multiple sclerosis.
Stan: Unspecified terminal illness.
Buck: Unknown - died before Stella was born.
Mickey and Bruce: Mickey was in a coma after receiving a gunshot. Bruce was his brother who never left his side and was in denial about Mickey's condition, often "speaking" for Mickey on his behalf.
Elena: "Fatal, short-term diagnosis."
Stella: Old age.

Stella didn't die from old age actually. You see parts of her life in the end and she ended up dying young, maybe 30ish. We don't know what she had that killed her, but she didn't die of old age.

That's a shame that plot is covered in the artbook but not in the game, isn't it?

I had different suggestions about Gwen...
Gwen said that she was in the afterworld for several weeks when she met Stella for the first time.
So I was actually thinking that Gwen, Stella [and probably Atul] died in the short timeframe.
As I understood Stella and Gwen were close till childhood so she must be either her sister, cousin or neighbour (as I don't remember Gwen calling Stella a sister).

I actually thought that house was blown up in a war conflict. Probably because Giovanni and Summer mentioned war.

Reminds me of Far: Lone Sails in this regard. Actually, a hell of a lot of Spiritfarer reminds me of Far: Lone Sails.

The reason why Giovanni is such a hedonist is because he survived the war - so that cannot be what killed him.

My feeling is, that the first characters have way more personality and background than the later ones :/

I both hated Giovanni and I liked him as well. I felt bad for Astrid, because he cheated on her all the time. Then you tell her the truth and she says "Maybe you should of kept the truth to yourself." I was shocked, Astrid was blinded by her love for him and simply didn't want to know? I guess.
