All my gamepad button prompts are wrong!

When I select controls for gamepad all the prompts are off, my X button is prompted as Y and similar...

I switched to using a PS4 controller. Those prompts seem to be right.

Same here :( it's so confusing, and I'm doing wrong things all the time. It really stops being relaxing to play like this.

Depending on which controller you are using, disabling Steam Input for the game might give you the correct prompts.

Thank you so much for trying to help! I tried all the advice on the forum I could understand - in the end I unplugged my Logitech F310 and am simply using the keyboard for now. In keyboard mode all the buttons work properly and I can simply follow the UI :D I'm learning to be better at the game now too, so stress levels are lowering all the time :)

I'm in the same situation.
I have tried to enable, disable Steam input.
I have tried using my Xbox One and PS5 controller.
It makes the game really difficult to play. Just a white box is shown, and then I have to guess what button it refers to.

And for me, the keyboard in a game like this is a step down :/
Never had this issue in any other game.

You probably have an extra peripheral being detected as a gamepad that mess up the prompts. If you have a thing like a flight stick/steering wheel/guitar hero dongle, try unplugging it. If you have a middleware like DS4Windows or x360ce running, also try disabling them.

Using Xbox controller, nothing else plugged in
Tried all the controller options.
When rebinding (if steam input enabled), the game gives me wrong buttons information, like Y is 'select'
Playing the guitar without prompts (only Ys show) is really difficult
Guess i'll play using the keyboard for the moment

Great game anyway :)
