How to play guitar?

I've tried both with controller and kb+mouse but can't get the guitar to work at all. When I press the button the game says, it just opens inventory and then closes it, or she just waters the plants. I'ts the same on both just planted seeds and growing plants, in both the field and the garden. I try holding Y on conmtroller, I try both F and R on kb+mouse, they all do the same thing and nothing in the options seem to change it at all, so now I'm stuck on that quest.

Hello! You need to hold the R button while in either the garden, field, or orchard with growing plants to trigger the minigame. Pressing the button will not trigger it.

That's exactly what I was doing and it wasn't working. Ended up reinstalling and after that it started working.
