Stuck without rockbreaker

Im going to make an assumption that i need the rockbreaker to get nebula thread, problem is i need nebula thread to advance any of my quests, or i need comet powder and zinc. i have all the skills i can get in the normal area (double jump, glide and ride on wires) but i need another skill to access any more chests, the chest island on the mountain spot i can just barely clip the edge but i cant get onto it, its the same height as alot of other water islands i cant reach. ive put about 5 hours in just mindlessly exploring places i have already been. screaming at chests just out of reach and wanting to throw my computer out of the window when i read the word nebula thread. is my save ruined? because if so im just going to quit. 22 hours of work potentially wasted because i CANT FIND NEBULA THREAD!!

You need Alice to get Nebula Thread, but you should be able to get her without Rockbreaker.

If you haven't got Alice yet, check the navigation map for islands that list spirits available (or islands you haven't visited to discover what they offer yet).

If you do have Alice (or if you've completed her quests and taken her to the Everdoor) then there should be a pillbug-like icon in some of the nebula areas in the Furogawa region, and sailing there should let you start the minigame to harvest Nebula Thread.

its on the left side of the map, the japanese naming islands there. it should be like a glowing bug icon, but yes u would need Alice, an old lady mole(?) spirit first
