Jackie made me nearly quit the game
I love this game, dangit i do, ive shown it to multiple friends, but gosh dang as someone who has been in inpatient facilities, residential facilities etcetera etcetera, and has experienced and witnessed abuse every single time from staff members, I have nothing but burning hatred for this man.

I cannot find any other posts talking about the mass amount of negative feelings Jackie brings up and it upsets me. Instead I see people justifying his abuse, or his unwillingness to take accountability, because people find Daria annoying, and I can't help but walk away from those specific posts with an intense feeling of "Wow some of yall really don't think mentally ill people deserve ethical treatment, okay."

Yeah, Jackie being practically the only person working at Overbrook is definitely not okay. But the problems at Overbrook go way beyond just Jackie - as part of the Overbrook questlines, we end up hiring on at least half a dozen staff to replace him, all of whom are more qualified (okay, maybe the new kitchen staff aren't exactly qualified chefs). Jackie might have been okay had he not been massively overworked, almost completely unsupervised and given no support nor education...

I have a lot more sympathy for Jackie (while not in any way condoning his neglectful and abusive actions) than I do for Elena.

As long as you don't condone his abuse im relieved. I think he's a bit personal to me as of my experiences in the mental health system... I do appreciate the narrative in the game that accountability is not easy and some people would rather give up and not put in the actual work to take accountability.

I do think accountability is possible but when he ingame asked me if I thought he could get better i honestly told him "No." and not because hes irredeemable but i could blatantly tell he only wanted to 'be better' because he felt like a bad person, not because he wanted to not hurt people yknow?

His letters to Daria when he left, really proved to me that he cared more about the emotional satisfaction of being forgiven, than actually not hurting people.

FWIW, I also couldn't forgive Jackie and I told him that I didn't think he could be better. But I think that's part of the game. Taking care of people you can't forgive or even like.

When i had the option I did say 'Yes' because just as a rule I genuinely do believe people have the capacity to be better.

But you and Wolf are completely valid in that interpretation, if I was allowed to expand beyond a simple 'Yes' I'd likely say something more to the end of 'Yes, if you truly desire to take on the work to examine your cruelty and move forward on a journey of continuos self reflection and improvement but I don't know if your ready or willing to do that.'

Not gonna lie reading the letters after I released him crushed me cause they show a person trying and failing to understand the process of healing and reconciliation.

Hurt people hurt people. While not being justification it is an explanation that offers me the ability to sympathize and sometimes empathize with that struggle some face to being 'good' when they've had no real reference to what that is and how to get there while navigating their traumas
