Can you remove houses of old guests?

They kinda take up a lot of room for houses that aren't even being used, but there doesn't seem to be a way to remove them that I can see.

I don't think so, and you kind of need to keep them around. After taking a given character to the Everdoor, the way you start their resource-gathering minigame in the future is by going to their house and interacting with their door.

Trust me, once you start getting more upgrades to make your boat bigger and bigger, it won't feel like they're taking up that much space.

No, you can't and, as noted, you need them to gather that guest's resources. Upgrade your boat. I didn't even need the bigger boats - ridiculous amount of room!!

i dont really understand the question but im gonna answer it 2 ways on how i interpreted it.

You cant remove spirit unique homes because they store spiritflower (essential game resource which can be only picked up once). Also some of the spirit unqiue houses are essential to start some of the minigames like gwens house for jellyfish or atul house for lighting bottle event. Only house you can remove is SPOILER Beverly (the little blue owl) false house (coccoo house or something) which kinda looks like very small windmill by salvaging later on then you build her's true house

If you meant that you built 2 guests houses its possible options are
1. SPOILER You got spirit stanely and he anexed your guest house and now you need to build second guest house, you cant salvage stanely new home since now it counts as unique spirit home
2. You experienced some kind of bug because as far i know guest house should be unique building
