About Gustav's story changes
Am I the only one thinking that changing Gustav's story, based on twitter sjw's suggestions, is unreasonable ?

Here is the link to someone complaining about said "ableism", from the part of Gustav : https://twitter.com/PunkinOnWheels/status/1300956699596124161?s=19
Also have a look at the answers by other users below this tweet, and do not hesitate to search for "spiritfarer ableism" to look up some other tweets on the matter, they all date back september-october 2020.

yeah i dont understand the math behind this one. it seemed liek it was fine. I mean not every person is gonna be happy with their lot in life, that's a huge part of acceptance as well.
And isn't that what Spiritfarer is all about?

This always bugged me so much. So much that it actually put me off playing the game for a while. What's the point of creating stories when you can't tell the story you want because some people got upset?

I mean, if you think about it, yes, that's what Spirifarer is all about, since every Spirit, has something that holds them back from moving on, it is the acceptance of said thing, that will help them move on, and go through the Everdoor.

I know how you feel, I've been meaning to play the new content, because you know, Spiritfarer is probably one of my top games of 2020. But seeing that they still wanted to change Gustav's story, felt incredibly off, and I'm at this point where I don't really want to play it right now...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like this. I really liked the game, it was definitely one of my top games of 2020. But changing Gustavs story just didn't sit right with me. So one person was offended because of a fictional character? So what? What else might they change if another easily offended person voices their opinion?

Well, in any case, they will do an update on that later, so we'll see how much he will change, but nevertheless, they shouldn't change it just because Twitter was offended.

Actually you're the ones making a fuss about it which is kinda confusing because:

1) You're not the ones who should define what is offensive and what it's not to people with disabilities;
2) Gustav's story is not "getting changed". It's being rewritten to address the concerns of the community who is being misrepresented.

Reducing it to "some people on Twitter who got upset" is just disrespectful and it puzzles me that you're talking about acceptance while being so narrow-minded about it.

This whole "some people on Twitter got upset", is actually what happened, and how it started. It is the exact reason why they are going to change this aspects of Gustav's character. What seems to bug some people, is that someone who is disabled, can feel strongly negative about it. People like that do exist, and do not need to be invisibilized. Rewritting, is changing, since it was an aspect of his backstory, the fact that he did not enjoy being in a wheelchair, is an aspect of his personality. If Gustav is offensive towards someone, it is toward himself, and not people in wheelchairs, he's not making fun of them or anything. So what do you think ?

i dcan think of at least 4 movies where the mc is in a wheelchair, and they haaaaaaaate it.
and usually leads up to a moment where they fall out of reacxh to the chair, and have to struggle to get in it, and then realize it's not as bad as they make it out ot be.

shoot, sidekicks and mac and me followed these beats to a T

Sorry for not being in the know here, but what?

What was Gustav’s original story? I’ve only just played through recently and this is very interesting; I agree that changing whatever the original was isn’t the best way to go. There’s a lot of stuff in Spiritfarer that one might find a bit too close to the bone, like cancer, brain death, dementia and infidelity... that’s the whole point of the game, coming to terms with ones lot in life before letting go and moving on.

What’s the outrage?

So the whole reason why Gustav's character is getting a change, is because, he has negative feelings about his own disability. He finished his life in a wheelchair, and he didn't enjoy it one bit. Then, people on Twitter, for the most part, started to complain about the fact that Gustav, was a misrepresentation of the disabled community, even though, he isn't depicted as such in the game.

Oh. That’s really unfortunate. I honestly think Gustav is one of the better written and more likeable characters in the game. I didn’t pick up on any writing that could have been interpreted as insensitive or offensive at all. That’s a real shame for whoever wrote Gustav - they did a great job.

Can’t say I’m thrilled about him being rewritten. :duranceleft::duranceright:

Devs must have a spine made out of jelly to bend over because complaints like that. Most of the time people who complain and their audience don't even play the games they complain about. Even if they did, Spiritfarer did well enough when it comes to sales and overall impression on reviewers/players so there is no need to appease vocal individuals to get a smidge of good PR.

btw I know a guy in a wheelchair and he also hates it so I guess he also misrepresents his own community and no he was never able to walk so this isn't anything new or a tragic accident kind of scenario

I agree with what you're saying. I think that the devs might have been scared to get in a controversy, because they choose to write Gustav that way. And a controversy, especially when it comes to cancel culture, is unhealthy for sales, since no one will even try to buy your game because of that.

I'm really curious about how much he'll be changed, I mean, he can still be negative towards his disability, but in a much more subtle way, one that is not "offensive" to say the least. But if they make him feel positive about his disability, I hope they won't make it forced or anything. What I loved about Spiritfarer was the way each character was wrote, they have their strengths, their weaknesses, and even though they are represented as animals, you can distinguish the human that it was before. Gustav does not need to be a spokesman for people with disabilities, he just needs to be himself.
Superscooter May 6, 2021 @ 6:01pm
That's extremely unfortunate. Gustav wasn't written like he hated being disabled and stuck to a wheelchair. He hated having to spend his *final days* in a wheelchair and it was out of his control. Completely different circumstances...

And so a small collection of SJW's get to define what is concerning or not and change a STORY to suit what they feel like in real life. You'd have to be living in a hole to not see that everything in the world is being altered to fit some woke agenda. I guarantee if you asked a large audience of people with disabilities what they thought, about 99% of them wouldn't even care or would appreciate a perspective that wasn't based on their own thoughts. (My wife and I both have mental health conditions that could be defined as a disability, especially when it cost me about 10 years of my life, and I can still laugh at anything related to it, and so can she)

Everything in western culture is being demonised, rewritten, slapped with warning labels, and cancelled. The woke mob will never stop because literally everything offends them.

When Snow White is now being called "s. assault" by the wokeists (and again laughed at by 99% of people) you know we've reached peak decadence and the west is going to crumble.
