when does the story get moving?
I opened the game up about an hour ago and the story hasn't developed at all after the intro scene with the old spiritfarer. 90% of my playtime has been the game minimized while I wait for the boat to reach a destination since there's nothing to do while it's sailing. All the dialogue has been the deer lady teaching me mechanics that I already figured out on my own. No exposition or story at all.

The world seems great and I'm getting some Mutazione vibes from it, but I'm not really interested in playing a 2D base building game. I'm really just here for the story everyone talks about, but it hasn't developed at all so far.

Shouldn't take too long for the feels to hit. Just keep doing Gwen's main missions.

If you're minimized during travel and just focusing on what there is to do, this game might not be for you. First of all, once you start getting multiple spirits on board, there will CONSTANTLY be tons to do, and if you're not working while the ship is sailing you won't be able to keep up. Second, while each spirit has a beautiful story to discover and relationship to build with you, the game won't hit you over the head with them. You have to pay close attention to all the dialogue and the things that are hinted in it, and just enjoy the hugs and other little moments.

Spiritfarer is a game where you uncover stories through resource management and base building, but resource management and base building are both still a big part of your actual active game time.

The game is about 30-40 hrs long. Maybe don't expect too much to happen in the first hr?

Just stick to Doom and Csgo. This game is not for you.

It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

From what I can see the game is a more of an experience and you just gotta go with the flow. And there ARE things you can do. Fishing and cooking is something you can do between destinations. Resource management is a fairly big part of the game.

If you're only doing it for the story and nothing else then this game might not be for you.

Play CSGO and Doom for good story telling? Are you confused?
I'm so confused. The speed of the boat seems pretty fast. I'm getting to places before I finish doing anything. The fact you can even sleep is confusing as there's not that much time to sleep when you're doing everything else. Honestly, the only way to get to story is to get through gameplay.

If you don't care about gameplay seriously just look at a walkthrough of the game on youtube or something. I'm sure there are playthroughs of the game that's just to take people through the story that don't want to bother with gameplay.

I've just started myself and I'd say that things get moving around the hour and a half mark.

I'm still going through some light tutorials, but way more activities are available to occupy your time in transit, existing ones get a bit more complicated (e.g. fishing mini-game becomes slightly more complex, you can play music to develop crops, etc.), and I've got a few new crew members with different wants and needs. More islands are opening up as well. As far as plot development, I'm just now starting to learn more about the characters now that they're finishing up telling me about the game mechanics.

Yeah, the first hour is pretty dull, and I think most people leaving you condescending comments have completely forgotten about how the game starts. Tutorials are always slow, boring slogs. But I think you should stick with it; for me it's just now finding its groove and I'm excited to see where the game goes.

All that being said . . . keep in mind this is a sim/ management game. All games like this tend to move at a more relaxed pace with their plot beats. So if you're expecting the plot to develop at the same pace as a story-focused adventure game, I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment. This seems like the type of game where it's a slow burn, that focuses more on making memories through your day-to-day interactions with your guests, until there's an emotional payout towards the mid and end game.

I came to search the forums to see if I missed a fast forward option. All I can do while slowly moving the boat is fish for herring, and I don't even know what those are for. Given the reviews I trust it will get better but at least at the start it really needs a fast forward option until you get more to do.

While the boat is moving you can fish, farm, build, craft, cook, ect. As for the story when I started playing I had plenty to do, even more so as I got more spirits on my boat. Since you want to keep them happy on a daily basis. So far I'm enjoying the game.

I kept with it a bit longer but I'm not enjoying it, I spent 10-15 minutes trying to reel in a fish after they 'upgraded' my fishing rod and it still got away despite taking some risks of breaking the rod trying to reel it in, I couldn't bring it in fast enough. I thought the boat moving was slow, but the fishing took me more than 3 times as long as the boat. I'm only 90 mins into the game but it's all just boring busywork, doesn't respect your time, I think I'm going to drop it. How it managed to get overwhelmingly positive is beyond me.

The game does respect your time, imo. You just need to get through the initial tutorials and gather a few new crew members. More quests, islands, mini-games and building options will unlock as you progress. The start is just meant to familiarize you with the basics.

it's a slow build.
Not to be offensive, but you sound like a younger person. The need to be instantly gratified or rewarded, usually.
this isn't a 10 minute fortnite match, or a round of amogus.
think more in line with a JRPG in terms of story telling, and you'll appreciate the fact this game actually puts effort into the writing.
Of course, if everything feels like a chore to you, then this simply isn't the game for you. And that's fine.

if you're not the type to play a game like animal crossing, cozy grove, stardew valley and the like; then you will liekly get little pleasure from this one.

No, I'm moderately old, so it's more that I don't have enough time to waste it. The slow moving boat where you just wait, the fishing that started taking a long time with no guarantee of success after putting the time in, and the amount of time it would take to grind the orbs/ money things in order to buy things is too much. I know it's the most expensive thing you could buy, but it cost I think 5,000 orbs to build a ladder, that is going to take me 2-3 hours and that's assuming I was able to stay in an orb area non-stop instead of having to find them every now and then; the actual time will probably be much, much longer. Collecting the orbs is also very dull and slow work, it's not worthwhile to do.

They also expect you to backtrack for an upgrade, they point out an upgrade station that requires 2 skill points but at the time you only have one. Then they send you on another long boat trip where you get the second skill point, so they expect you to backtrack, go all the way back again on another long boat trip back to the same place you were just at. I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it. Sitting on a boat watching a progress bar fill up for 2-5 minutes anytime you go anywhere is not compelling gameplay in my opinion.

I was drawn to it because of some reviews praising the emotional story, a game about helping souls pass on that does it well could be an amazing experience. But it's too much grinding and waiting around for things. Other people obviously like the game, but I didn't.
