Giovanni's Obol?

So, I'm stuck in a bit of a stubbornness-induced Catch-22 right now. I want to feed Alice her favorite dish before she departs my boat - Veggie Pot Pie. Veggies are no problem, but I need flour for it too, and since you can't buy that anywhere (and I foolishly wasted the two samples you get from the meal-plan packages on other cooking-projects), that means I need a Windmill. The windmill needs Marble to build, and that means I need access to the quarry up in the icy regions, but the guard won't let me in until I've gotten the three first upgrades - double-jump, float and ziplining. I've got the first two, but I still need the zipline... and I'm one Obol short of being able to get it.

Giovanni is the problem. He came aboard recently, and it seems pretty clear that I won't find any other souls for my boat until I move on a fair bit further. However, he hasn't offered up an Obol yet! I thought I just needed to progress his questline a bit, but after a quick trip to pick up a (very expensive) box of chocolates, he now wants me to pop down to another island for a bouquet of roses... an island that lies beyond the rocky barrier.

To break through the rocky barrier I need the next bow-upgrade, to get the next bow-upgrade I need another spirit-flower, to get another spirit-flower I need to send Alice on her way, but I refuse to do so until I've cooked her a veggie-pot pie, which apparently isn't possible until I've gone beyond the rocky barrier...

What am I missing? How do I get that freeloading Giovanni to cough up his Obol? Do I ACTUALLY need to continue his quest for that? When I talked to him, he actually acted like I already had the flowers he needed, but I'm pretty sure I don't. Or am I just in an impossible situation?

Giovanni will give you his Obol a bit later in his quest. In all likely hood, you are missing a spirit. Do you also have Gustav on board? The 6 obols you need should come from:

Astrid
Alice
Summer
Gwen
Gustav
Atul

You're right, I'm missing Gustav... must have missed him COMPLETELY somehow. Not sure where, though - the only spirit I've found but not yet recruited is the one hanging around down in the Japanese place, who wants you to find a rare woodcutting... and I doubt THAT'S Gustav!

Huh. Not where I'd expect a Surströmming-loving Gustav, I'll admit. Ah well, time to get going, then! Presumably HE will cough up his Obol in a timely fashion, at least...
