Accidentally hit new game. Lost all save data.
This was on the GamePass version, if that makes a difference. There is no confirmation for starting a new game. I accidentally clicked it and now I lost my 6+ hours game. :steamsad:

Because of the cross-compatiblity with Xbox saves, it is unfortunately very hard for us to manipulate/restore saves on Game Pass. We are hard a work trying to identify all possible causes of data lost, but not much we can do to restore it on game pass. I am terribly sorry about that.

At least in my case, I don't think it's an issue with the game itself corrupting saves. The menu UI lags behind on game pass when loading but accepts inputs even when not loaded. That's what caused my accidental erasure at least.

Just lost 20h of game progress because of this too. Very frustrated, I'd say it needs immediate fix.

I had the same happen to me today too. (GamePass version)
Lost about 8 hours of playtime, very annoying.
I hit a button before the UI on the main menu had updated - that's where I accidentally started a new game which automatically seems to have deleted my progression... :(

At least add a prompt when selecting a new game that asks if I really want to overwrite my save, that would have probably saved me from making that mistake.

This just happened to me to. Really makes me sour on the game unfortunately, it seemed good.
It's that stupid profile loading that all Gamepass games does, that makes it lag and accept input at the wrong time

Bumping this because I've made a thread too. My experience was a bit different - I didn't accidentally hit anything, the game's UI bugged and displayed the "Press any button" text over the main menu and wouldn't let me interact with the main menu options normally. So when I clicked somewhere - far away from any of the menu options, mind you, I was just trying to clear the "Press any button" text - somehow that started a new game. I closed it within like 5 seconds but it didn't matter, save file gone, 20+ hours gone.

A game about accepting death has just unceremoniously died on me. I WAS NOT READY, SPIRITFARER. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PREPARE ME FIRST. THERE'S SUPPOSED TO BE POPCORN BEFORE I DIE. WHERE IS MY POPCORN, SPIRITFARER?

You can tell I'm not taking it very well right now. The devs NEED to implement some sort of in-game cheat code that will let players regain progress, through some sort of customization menu or pre-built save files we can load to get us back up to speed.

Worst part is I also have the game through gamepass, so I'm screwed there short of that in-game fix I just mentioned. But I'm willing to buy the game AGAIN through steam if the devs or any kind souls out there who are near where I was are willing to create a save file I can transfer into my own files. That's possible, right? That'lll work?

Exactly the same thing has happened to me. Loaded the game, pressed any button and due to the lag in loading profile, it sent me into a new game and I've lost my save after putting in so many hours.

Couple of suggestions for the dev's which may help;

1) When starting a new game and a save file exists, ask the user to confirm before overwriting save.
2) Failing being able to retrieve the original saves on windows game pass, As FEF mentions above, possibly a customisation game preset that lets those affected pick their game state? Might have to only allow you to select which spirits are with you and provide some resources accordingly to then re-build?

I don't blame the dev's for this particular situation as it feels more like a windows pass limitation. However, it is very frustrating and as much as I was really enjoying the game.

Out of curiosity, I found what appears to be save game data under the file path;

C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Packages\44905ThunderLotusGames.40196900AE792_hbhkcnqstm4gr\SystemAppData\wgs

Looking through a hex reader I can see mention of save information. However, I'm not sure what can be done with this file?

Nothing much, GamePass/MS Store verison currently is pretty bugged. As an possible workaround, see if you can try to back upcurrentfiles, disable save sync anywhere in the MS store settings (if there is such thing, never used it, see if Google helps), then start new game, save at the ship, quit and then replace SF_SAVE_GAME*.sav where * is the slot number of the save file with the old one and see if it restored progress.

Here is breakdown what is what:
SAVE_OPTIONS.sav - game options, not tied to specific savegame slot
SF_SAVE_GAME0.sav - saved game slot itself, "0" in this case means slot1 in the menu
USER_INFO.sav - some game metadata, I think mostly used for achievements and unlocks, stats tracking.

On Steam you should have access to many backup saves through the Load Auto Save menu. On Gamepass, it is possible the save still exist, you can try the following guide and see if allows you to resotre it. Hope this helps!

That 'new game' right under continue does make me nervous and now that I read this even more so. A big fat, clear confirmation at the least would be nice

Yes, as Steam does not require any certification for patches, we are able to update more quickly. Other languages are coming soon on Gamepass.

I read on the games official support page that they'd released a patch for this. Turns out, I have no idea how to check game version on Game Pass.
Anyway, I started the game and pressed continue. And it was my old save! This is despite the game starting a new game on me previously. So hopefully more of you will have my luck

Was exactly the same for me, that's great :)
