Accidentally hit new game. Lost all save data.
This was on the GamePass version, if that makes a difference. There is no confirmation for starting a new game. I accidentally clicked it and now I lost my 6+ hours game. :steamsad:

Thank you. I just hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. I suppose getting over the loss and starting a new game kinda fits the theme anyhow.

There's a option named "load auto save" in the main menu, maybe you can check is it old save files in there

Right now my main menu is as if I haven't played at all. With the continue button grayed out. I think the GamePass version is missing some menu options as well, according to the other threads.

Check c:\Users\%USER%\AppData\LocalLow\Thunder Lotus Games\Spiritfarer\
file "SF_SAVE_GAME_BACKUP0.sav"
rename SF_SAVE_GAME0.sav
see if it helps

Sadly it did not. GamePass games store all of the data in protected Windows files that you cannot access. In this case it seems the save games as well as the folder in question isn't there on my computer.

UPDATE: After some extensive digging and some trickery to gain access to the protected files in question, it would seem that the GamePass version does not store any save data locally. I did find debug save files but they seem to be part of the main files and not anything to do with the user.

Had this issue with the game pass version. I think I hit start new game by accident, it said push any key and I hit all the buttons on my controller like an idiot. A new game started =-P I killed it instead of saving on exit. When I went back in there continue was grey =-\
I really dig this game, but being one oopsiedoodle away from losing all progress is offputting.

This happened to me as well on the gamepass version, trying to find a way to recover the data. As a workaround if you copy the "wgs" folder as a backup you can restore from that if it happens again. I found the wgs folder here:
\AppData\Local\Packages\44905ThunderLotusGames.40196900AE792_hbhkcnqstm4gr\SystemAppData\

Really disheartening to lose progress like that though. I'm wondering if there is a way to use the debug saves as a restore point for the place I was in the story.

Thank you! This will at least allow me to start a new game without worrying too much about losing progress.

Because of the cross-compatiblity with Xbox saves, it is unfortunately very hard for us to manipulate/restore saves on Game Pass. We are hard a work trying to identify all possible causes of data lost, but not much we can do to restore it on game pass. I am terribly sorry about that.

At least in my case, I don't think it's an issue with the game itself corrupting saves. The menu UI lags behind on game pass when loading but accepts inputs even when not loaded. That's what caused my accidental erasure at least.

This exact thing just happened to me this morning. I played for 2 full days and was near the end. I don't know if I can go through that emotional roller coaster again. You REALLY should change it so that selecting 'new game' doesn't immediately erase the previous save file.

Just happened to me too on XBox Gamepass for PC. I don't even think I hit a button twice. Just pushed X on the press any button screen.
Was close to the end after playing 2 days straight, I liked the game but I am not sure I am up for replaying it again immediately, maybe I will wait a few years and then replay it.

Seems to be a lot of issues with games on game pass for PC i wonder how much testing they go through before going live.

Didn't hit New Game or anything, but found my save file gone when trying to play on PC with the Game Pass version but on my Xbox, it loads it like normal. So the file still exists on the Xbox servers.

Happened to me a little while ago.
On GamePass
After two intense days of play, at the "press any key" screen a new game has started and the other game has been permanently deleted.
