View cones don't work

How do you fix this ? Do you need them to play the game ?

background:
The game has a lot of issues on different configurations, in your case the View cones doesn't work on the other had the view cones works on AMD but the graphic completely corrupted since 2015.
The only reason you able to play Desperados 1 without issues is that the game updated in 2018 just before Desperados 3 announcements to support modern systems. no other games has been updated since.
Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood has the game stutter when a view cone activated.

The solution:
There is the [https://steamcommunity.com/app/9710/discussions/0/3345546172887237836/] software emulation [/url] where the game run on the cpu but the frame rate will be
terrible for most if not all current CPUs.
The best solution is to use Valve's Proton on linux, here is a tiny guide in how to;

1. Install a linux of your choice, Ubuntu is the most popular (i used Mint which based on Ubuntu). The are many guide online in how to install alongside windows but a separate drive always the best.

2. Update linux and install steam client from the app store.

3. Since the game not officially white listed by vlave; from your steam Library right click on the Desperados 2 title then click properties. From there go to the compatibility tap and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility and pick a Proton version (i used the experimental but if it doesn't work at the time of reading this use older version).

4. Install and play
4.1 [optional] Coping the save from Windows to Linux; first you need to play the game once to create all folders structures. Copy "Cooper's Revenge" folder from your documents on windows to ".steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/9710/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents" on linux.
Also copy settings.xml from "\data\configuration\game" in game files on windows to the same location on linux. (this will unlock the missions, without it you will not be able to select the save within the mission)

Conclusion:
It maybe not for ideal for everyone but more and more older games getting broken with the newer hardware. Valve's Proton on linux is the best solution at the time being and i hope that valve make a similar tool for windows.

Thank you for your time in explaining and helping me get this fixed,and about the app store on steam. How do you set that up,and what is this app,and what does it do ? Is it free ? :) Can i install any version of Unbuntu as long as compatible with windows ? Is this easy to set up,and get fixed ?{mind my english} I just cannot play without the cones so either I just skip Coopers Revenge,and move on to Helldorado and than to 3,or fix this issue,and enjoy the game. I would hate to skip a prequal to this wonderful story western.

One more question where do you find \data\configuration\game ? I am just a Swedish girl that is not too PC savy lol

I called it app store because it called software Manger in mint while in Ubuntu called something else.
You can't miss them as they are both pre installed on Linux where you can download many apps easily including steam.

For the path location, on steam client just right click on the game title the properties. Go the the local files tab and click on the browse to open the game directory. This apply to windows and Linux.
For the main save on Linux go up from the game files a couple of times to find the /compatdata/9710/...... Etc

Linux is easy to use once installed since there is app store like Android and iPhones and most of the lib pre installed and the rest handled by steam.

Thank you again for your help :) I will ask some questions if you don't mind while setting up the linux :) I will get to that tomorrow as it is time for bed here in Stockholm heh I do hope they fix Desperados 2 where you can play it on modern pcs without having to dl software.

I am still having trouble getting the linux to work with steam lol My boyfriend can't even figure it out,and I realize that I cannot play Desperados 2 without the cones because some quests require you using stealth,and sneaking instead of just shooting and hiding. Even Kate's seducing needs that purple cone because it's hard to get someone to trail you. I need help hah

Sometimes you can just be bold and run/walk fast enough so they won't notice or lure them somewhere else. Also have you try all the possible directions and not try to find another way in, depending what mission you are on.

Sometimes you can just be bold and run/walk fast enough so they won't notice or lure them somewhere else. Also have you try all the possible directions and not try to find another way in, depending what mission you are on.

This mission I am on you can't make a sound or the mission is over so if I get caught I can't runaway or hide because they run to the guards so without the cones I can't really do much or know who sees me,sneaking is not much an option.. I might just skip this game and move on to Helldorado. YesI tried all the directions,and this mission where you save the indian is guarded heavily,and if the cones did work I would enjoy solving it,and dodging the cone where I can see exactly what part of the beam I can stand before I get caught. Helldorado,Desp 3,and Desp 1 all have cones but it is a shame I have to skip this game because it's part of the prequal.

from ubuntu use the browser and go to the steam website and click on "Install Steam" to install linux steam version. if the steam not installed successfully update the linux using "software updater" app on ubuntu. restart linux and try installing steam again from the website.

login into steam, look for the game from you library then properties>compatibility and enable ______ Steam Play______ and pick any of the latest proton from the menu. the game become installable, so install the game and play once.

Before all that, from windows backup your settings.xml and "Cooper's Revenge" folder from my documents if you want your windows game save back for easier recovery on linux.

I got passed the Hawkeye mission without having to use the cones because I used Kate's makeup to blind,and also I used alot of seducing soldiers to dark corners skill than knocked them out,and than I finally got to the indian,and on to the next mission where I had my team to help me through the rest with their unique skills. Now I have an indian that has great sneaky skills for the rest of the game. What is also great about third person is instead of the cones you get colour question marks so you know when you are annoying the guards to red cone. I just have two more chapters now to complete,and I will be on to Helldorado with cones. You can really get around anything on this game if you be patient,and try other tactics,and use different skills. Thank you for the tips,and help :)

I am almost done with the game because I tried different tactics,and they worked so I don't need the cones or the linux but thank you so much for going out of your way,and helping me fix this game which I decided to just have patience,and I figured out the paths to victoury by trying different moves and tactics.
