attack and defend is intermittant?

just got the game after beating remnant 1 and 2 and I found out quickly that I can use my mouse to look around just fine but I find it often that my attack and block are temporarily disabled and i'm forced to dodge enemies. its not really a good introduction to the game and I'm wondering if there is a fix for it.
