Is Root suitable for coop with kids?

Would you recommend the game for playing in coop with kids, with whatever expansion required (I suppose clockwork)?
My kids (8 and 12) like playing Age of Mythology together or with me. I wanted to go into something more boardgamey (then maybe take the board game if the computer version is a hit with them), but competitive play wouldn't work very well as the smaller one would get trounced, unless the sides are maissvely imbalanced.

Root is quite a complex game, but co-op against the clockwork is a great way to get into Root if players aren't equally experienced.
