I think Marquise vs Eerie is fine. It's not as varied as a full game but it's still strategic and interesting.

I have played a lot of 2p games of the tabletop game and Marquise vs Eerie is the default, Marquise vs Alliance is also pretty fun. For a real challenge, Eerie vs Vagabond (Ranger) is a really fun one, same for Alliance vs Eerie. The last two matchups are really hard for the Vagabond and Alliance but if you are in for a challenge, go for it!

its okay, but your options are limited. the game truly shines at 3 or 4.

It should be noted that you can fill in the unused slots in a multiplayer match with AIs. I find this to be the better way to play at lower player counts. The forest is lonely with only 2 people in it and having some automated factions in the game gives you something closer to the full Root experience.
