Thanks for reaching out!

Root involves hidden information (cards) for each player, which makes Remote Play Together tricky.

We do fully support online multiplayer, so you'll definitely be able to fight your friends for control of the woodland, wherever they happen to be.

Bump. Would really love this feature.

It bothers me that the dev team considers this feature unnecessary.

There are other games that have hidden card mechanics that utilise Remote Play Together. And if marketing is concerned, I feel it doesn't hinder sales, in fact, I believe it encourages them.

Remote play works well as a social advertisement, if you will, to help one enthusiastic player convince their friends to purchase and play as well. I really enjoyed using it as a tool to convince several friends to play and purchase Lords of Waterdeep. I am often playing 4p - 5p (IRL friends) games, three players of which I was originally playing Remote Play 1v1. The remote-play-shared-interface and controls are a hindrance to streamlined play especially in games of 3 or more, but they're still enjoyable enough to make my friends see the worth in purchasing complete copies themselves. With Root's design, I doubt that gamers would gravitate toward not purchasing due to remote play.

I'm sure ppl may reply; "just get the game anyway, it's the price of round of beer." It's a strange thing; purchasing a $20 AUD game is pretty hard to convince someone to do, but getting them to buy a round of drinks is easy. Remote play, at least in my case helped get past this hurdle, and even had mates gifting games to net in other players.

I'm interested in learning about games with hidden cards that support/promote Remote Play Together.

How do they handle that mechanic?
omniwyrd Aug 21, 2020 @ 3:27pm
It's pretty much playing hotseat remotely, so you can not be assured that the remote player is being honest in looking away from their screen.

Personally, I accept the aspect is broken, but play anyway. This flaw is the reason why I consider that remote play doesn't affect sales.

At least your friends can see what the game is like without purchasing the game. I did this with both Terraforming Mars and Waterdeep. I really hope the dev reads my posts to know that it is not uncommon for games with hidden card mechanics that incorporate remote play.

That said I am sure there would be other considerations at work without us knowing, but respect their design decisions. And possibly it may be at this time in Early Access they do not wish to take on the feature.

Oh, and the fact that a game can be purchased and refunded if within a two hour limit.

Our board game group is made up of couples who live together and share a computer. As such, we need the equivalent of local pass and play with online play, and Remote Play Together is decent for that, even with the need to keep information hidden.

Can you support local play + online through another mechanism?

DWD never do a Remote Play feature with their other games, even on sagrada that has only the secret color objective.
anyway you can always use Parsec and it is free... https://parsecgaming.com/
also agree with you, even with hidden infos, remote play is always a great feature to promote purchasing. anyway this must be valid only for local matches.

there is a solution, of course i think is expensive, but a mobile companion app should be interesting. atm only one digital tabletop game support it, cluedo.

Adding my voice to the mob. I also would like to see remote play together added.

This seems like an obvious thing to add if pass and play is already in there, it's effectively the same thing. I'm not sure how much trouble it is to enable remote play but if it's easy I don't see why you wouldn't allow people the option.

I'd also really love to see Remote Play Together. I'm happy to buy one copy and introduce the game to my friends in an attempt to get them to purchase, but I'm having a really hard time convincing them to buy it cold. At this time, it's sadly a refund for me until remote play is enabled.

I've also convinced a couple of friends of mine to buy Terraforming Mars through remote play together, they saw in one game that they liked how it played, and as soon as we were done went and bought it.

I own the physical copy of Root, and would buy this in a second if it had remote play. It is for the reason people are saying above, I use remote play to show people games. It often increases sales by allowing us to convince friends to spend the money. Until that feature is added there is no point in buying this as I won't be able to play with any of my friends.

I see that social aspect of this, due to the corona situation it would be welcomed by many. I've used zoom for this for one occation and used share screen. It require good communication and the host to listen what the other want to do if used with pass and play.

But this is a good game to implement this feature with remote play, because it has the designs for make it work well, just like other couch and board games. An example: If it's is 2 people in each ends, it could be played with 4 people. Would be nice for friends and couples. (But on the other hand I don't know the work aspect of implementing it.)

Remote Play Together is an awesome feature. I also used it in the past to introduce friends to digital boardgames, and if we play enough of a game, they tend to buy it so it is more confortable to play together. Not adding it to a game with pass & play actually seems weird.

Would love to see this feature added to the game !

You don't need Remote Play Together to play this with other people. There's a separate application called Parsec that will give you the same functionality with any game, not just Steam.
