Has nothing to do with the game, but instead with uplay itself.
Give it some time to come back.
sounds more like a graphiccard issue even tho I am completly unsure because I can be literally anything.
I believe I'm having the same issue with the History Collection version on UPlay, but I get the error "RwEngineSetVideoMode(VideoMode)" and my monitors don't go to sleep.
What I've read from others is that it is searching up older models of displays or graphic cards, and because you're playing on a system newer than 2004, it causes this error.
As for a solution, there's a zip of exe files that should be working with this version: https://workupload.com/start/VwbhS5Z
The two exe files in the zip should go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\theSettlers5\bin\
They both need to be renamed from settlershok_w10cu.exe to settlershok.exe and shokmapeditor_w10cu.exe to shokmapeditor.exe
I still can't it to work on my primary HDMI monitor, but can get his work around to work on my second DVI/DP monitor, which isn't a fix for me as that's stationary in portrait mode. So, I share your frustration that there's a "History Edition" that was worked on within the past few years that hasn't resolved this common Windows 10 problem.
I got this error on another version. I got told that this render-error mostlikely happens because of many instances of the game. I had this problem once and relised that it was open on another desktop. After closing it zhe problem was solved to me.
Additionally to your "fix" with the w10cu-exe: if you use that exe you are using the gold edition and not the hisotey edition anymore. That means you are not able to play uplay-mp (other mp is possible after some modifications).
Once i read that the render problem has something to do with some windowsfiles. As I know they can be repaired somehow, but I don't take any responsibilty, because the websites brought there look scatchy and not trustworthy.
Edit: also we got a better place downloading these w10cu filesm there is a website where we got everything and it is getting updated these days for english users. It is dedk.de/wiki
The link there is btw the same as you posted, just in a wiki.
I found a solution for us using UPlay History Edition that doesn't require downloading. I read that on launch, the game wants to use fullscreen, which could be causing the render-error.
This guide makes the game launch in windowed mode: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1689822240
Well if it works, then that is the way to solve it.
Glad to see the community helping each other.
