It's possible the greater your friendship the higher the chances of you finding an item but I'm not sure, I also have no idea if there's a set amount of items they can find since the one my dog found belonged to a specific person.

Hmm if it's luck then straight i up have the worst luck, been bringing my dog out every night and he's on 4 hearts currently :(
Did you per chance have to stop for the do to then find something? Or was you just moving and the dog randomly barked?
I did have to stop - when I called it onto the map I was on it didn't bark or run to a spot until it had caught up with me.
Thanks, must be that I'm not stopping all the time then I guess.
