I still dont understand why we cant upgrade melee weapons, like ranged one.

you will start getting it once you unlock the final area of the game. its an event that is luck based on both enocuntering it and being able to get the hammer. and melee has always been great i dont ever have ammo issues. honestly i have way too much ammo. they do quite a bit of damage one shotting normals most of the time or two shotting and alot of special enemies can be abused by using melee such as sitting just outside their attack range and hitting them.

Is there anything good about it? I kind of just want to sell it. The damage doesn't compare because I invested in gun skills. And I already always carry a shovel just in case I somehow waste 20k bullets.

And what are the conditions for taking the hammer, I just found it and I can't pick it up, writes that I am not worthy (although I have good karma)

if the devs didn't change the odds in this update, supposedly it was found in the code that you had to roll a '666' on a RNG 1~1000; so very rare
karma played no roll in success

Just keep trying to grab it. You may end up do it several hundred of times as the chance to grab is 1 from 1000. Silly design.

NGL, it's not that good xD I mean it's cool to have it and all, but I'd rather equip a high-end shovel just in case of a dig site.

damage without improvements is about 30-35

I got the thors hammer today but the atk shows as 12. very weird
