Which skills and perks to pick?
I'd rather not feel like I picked useless skills to invest in, so what are the most useful ones generally?

You can't ever go wrong with firearms, speech is alright for a modest amount, depending on your current location, I took a heavy amount of investment into trader, got atleast maybe. . I dunno 3k off of a 13k weapon? Personally i'd just choose stuff that'd be useful more in the longrun, lockpick and hacking are easy on their own without skills and there's no point in doctoring if you don't die in one hit, defense is the same way, health- sure put some points in it but it's a 1/1 ratio so you're better off playing safer.

For perks, I went for reading, good student, skilled, scavenger and steady aim so far, can't tell you how much late game investment for skills that is, sure you might be losing a perk here and there but in my honest opinion there's not many. . heavy hitting positive perks, some are good like for example 5% critical chance 1&2 and better crits for a crit build, but theres only so much you could really get that affects gameplay, i.e a gimick skill that makes you have higher speech with women, or a skill that keeps you from dying once after getting knocked down to 1 hp, etc etc.

It's better you experiment or see what you want in your character, my advice at-least.

F2P get Driving
Steam $10 player get Critical Chance & Laser weapon, firearms just buy book from trader
Perks : Reading & Bookworm is must have
More Critical & Better Critical is best for kill zombies

One thing i noticed speech firearms healing and outdoorsman can be leveled using books but i havent found a single one for the remainder so maybe leveling stuff you cant increase using books may be nice however with the exeption of maybe guns since it will take quite a while until you get laser weapons
as for perks well i guess backpack space is gonna be nice and of course better crits and the Crit chance increasing perks
Lockpicking and hacking as mentioned are pretty easy (and for lockpicking you have basicaly infinite tryes as long as you have lockpicks) otherwise i do like the pet talking one since it gave a few additional quests however non of them are neccesary of course
i would stay away from the perks that barely do anything (like getting more speech when talking to a woman getting 10 skill points in a random skill driving faster and the like)
only one i wanna get later on is the nothing perk just to see if it has some hidden effect or opens anything up

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already gotten reading and bookworm, since the long term benefits seemed worth it. I'll probably get driving eventually since I'm f2p, but not right away. I'm still thinking about skills, but I'll probably put quite a bit into firearms and trader, saving money over the long term seems worth it. I think I'll get the skilled perk, since there's very few useful perks. I'll keep thinking about the rest as I play.

While I'm at it, anyone have any weapon suggestions? Currently I'm using the m1 garand. And are melee weapons ever useful? They seem so weak, I only carry a shovel for the times I need to dig.
Jojo Oct 15, 2019 @ 9:33am
Kar98k always was reliable for me, and melee weapons. . hrm, no real advice there, you're much safer with a gun anyway- besides, the game is generous enough to give you a heck load of 7.62mm ammo so there's basically little reason not to pick one of those guns up, otherwise I picked up the pump shotgun with five shells in it, unless you're already in springvale i'd say go for those two in woodlands.

ComfyWolf Oct 15, 2019 @ 9:48am
I actually just made it to springvale, didn't realize how close I was, so best weapons for this new area would be nice
Jojo Oct 15, 2019 @ 1:25pm
Probably the dedicated sniper-rifle and Remington 870 for shotguns, assault rifles are on the fence for me, eats too many bullets for value.
Razter Oct 15, 2019 @ 3:07pm
I've found the best way to farm ammo is to do ace's missions in Springfield. Especially the sniper mission. The rocket mission is ok but it can be kinda long and you can take damage from it. The third mission is kinda garbage (zombie hunt I think? cant remember right now)

Just stick with the repeatable sniper mission for ammo. Side note: the sniper rifle and ammo are provided so you dont need to bring any weapons to beat the mission.

Oh and I bought the game so I dont know how feasible this is in F2P with the gas thing.
[MNI] Kisune Oct 15, 2019 @ 3:48pm
Well i havent bought any weapon up to now and still do fine (about to finish the second area)
The only thing i buy is some 9mm ammo other then that everthing went into bocks and the open world (and well upgrading the ammo workbenches in the houses)
had to buy maybe 5 or 6k ammo up to now 2 times the ace zombie hunting mission in the second area pays for it since there is a tresor in there most of the time
and especialy now with the zombies having less health since last patch is realy is quite alright to just go with whatever they provide if you wanna max the open world (also caused me to gather up like 200liter in fuel that i dont have any use for even thought i am f2p and now regretting getting driving up)
all of that in maybe 3 days since downloading the game so a active playstyle and less of the free stuff you get over time
edit i currently have 15 of the big canister sitting in my trunk each one is 30 liters
so after doing the math thats 450 liters of fuel sitting around

M24 Sniper and Omerta shotgun, upgrade sniper reload speed to max, use sniper to kill regular zombie and shotgun for specials and tank like puker also bandits at close range

The skill that i always start leveling first is the Defense to the max level (200), because this will reduce all the incoming damage you will receive, the maximum defense i could reach for the moment is 72,3% which is like having almost 4 times extra health. This will avoid you to bought a lot of medicines to restore health. After maxing it, if you're a free PC player you must max out the Driving skill to avoid use so much fuel to travel around. Take in mind that there are NPC's who will sell you cars for a price. The perk i will choose first is skilled, to get 2 extra points for each level at cost of receiving a perk point each 4 levels, and when you get another perk point use it to learn good student. Is really important because in the late game you will need a lot of skills points to survive dangerous areas or in case you're running out of fuel. The skills i don't recommend you to increase are Firearms, Curing, Outdoorsman, and Speech, because there are books that you can bought from the traders or get randomly when you kill an enemy to improve them with the time.

Alright now a question from me
How do you guys handle the open world
weekend just ended for me meaning i can play far less
went online and locked at the map turns out i have around 130k in worth lying around in maps but due to it ticking down i mostly drove around once i entered a level startet sprinting around grabing most of the obvois stuff and leaving
while yes i did get quite a bit of loot that basicaly left me with 40 minutes of just running and ignoring any zombies causing me to just quit in the end since it was just no fun

so i took the nothing perk just because i was curious as well, if you put a point into it, it returns two perk points, giving you a extra perk point and refund the point you put into nothing perk
