You are using automatic weapons, right? Actually, the correct weapon to use in open world are the single shot rifles (Kar 98, or sniper rifles).
I myself prefer the sniper rifle at 20k coins range. The Kar 98 is in the 16k range so it can be used in earlier stage, when you gained access to open world, you should have earned enough to get the Kar 98. Get close to lure the zombies walk towards you, take your time to aim at its head and pull trigger. You usually will get a kill with 1, at most 2 bullets on average zombies, 3 or 4 shots to kill the tougher zombies. If you invested enough in Critical Hit, and wear the full set of armor that boosts Critical Hit, you should be able to dispatch most tougher zombies in 1 or 2 shots, if you score a critical hit.
Don't get yourself into close combat, since you are probably not wearing the highest protection gears (like, I keep wearing the critical hit armor until I was level 60+ in my previous game, since I never let the zombies get close enough to damage me, the only thing I have to be aware of are the pukers and QB, human opponents aren't too hard to dispatch with head shots)
If you are hurt, use bean and water to heal yourself, it's not hard to run far enough to give yourself some time to recover, and bandages are only for emergency.
For Snipers, you don't even have to get so close, just get close enough where you can comfortably score a head shot with 1 bullet, and you are all good. If one head shot don't kill them, spend some gold coins to upgrade your sniper rifle.
With this, you should have been able to get back 2 or 3 boxes of 7.62 ammo for every one you spend. Other ammo are considered free income.
Of course, if you really want to earn some free ammo, go do Rocket Day or Sniper Day from Ace. My personal favorite is Sniper Day, since I'm a sniper freak, and this mission don't cost you anything in ammo and bandages. Just keep the doctor alive, scoring 100% health will not get you any bonus (HINT: do something developer, if there are more bonus rewords, like + 20% exp and coins, for achieving 100% health in Rocket Day and Sniper Day, it'd be more fun to play)
Agreed, the economy system in this game is totally screwed. But I can't blame them, game developers usually didn't study economy in school, and they usually don't get out of their basement/cave/science base very often, so they'll never know how economy works...
On the other hand, very little silver coins vs very expensive better weapon = players will be tempted to convert gold coins into silver coins = players will be tempted to spend money buying gold coins = WIN!
Maybe they really do have a master economist in their team. This is originally a money grabbing mobile game after all, no?
Aye, mate, they keep slapping those cr4p in our face, even after we paid for the Ultimate Pack (fro Steam Only). The fuel thing don't bother me any bit though, I have so unfortunate to pay them and is still constantly being harassed by their advertisement. I just scrap all fuel remains, they are simply useless to me. Wish they could have been wise enough to convert the fuels remains to coins automatically on pick up, for us paid players.
Weird, I've never had any of these problems as a F2P player and I've had an over surplus of ammo with no reason to spend money beyond skill books whenever they pop up.
Though I do have to admit the ads are a pain but they're easily ignorable.
