What ecactly is leveling for? (newbie asks)

Does my character increase through that in any way or do i just level up to get higher missions with higher rewards? Is it more intelligent to always pick the mission with highest gold and less xp then? Greetings

Firstly, your Hit Points are calculated based on your level.
Secondly, higher character level means better available equipment and higher level of missions and rewards.
Then, there are certain thresholds at which you can find dungeon keys. You can find the first key at level 10+, then at 20+, and so on.
You also unlock different portions of the game at specific levels. For example, Fortress is available from level 25 on, epic weekend bonuses - from level 50, pets - starting at level 75, and so on.

Always go for the best XP per minute reward. The items in the shops are level-based so reaching a higher level offers you better items.
