I feel that's just the nature of these kinds of games though
One less player in the game and a human heart for me is always better to than to leave a potential threat. Since "Hell is Others".
You want to eat mushrooms and pills. Focus on movement speed and endurance (stamina) first. Vitality is more rare but also useful but in order to get away from enemies movement speed is necessary, even with less stamina you can juke people and escape. But if they have more stamina AND movement speed and they are agressive you're screwed.
So to avoid this slow walk into new areas and if you hear any footsteps or the sound of people eating creep away and then walk away. Avoid shots. Once you have decent move speed and stamina bring a non starter pistol out, hope you find a machine gun in a random box, start crafting bullets asap.
So do the pottery store quest as soon as you can. Also the bank quests are necessary to start depositing money from your stash to the bank, and then the other guy in the bank will unlock you a very useful safety deposit box.
Try and get a few mushrooms and pills into you when you can. Mushrooms benefits always outweigh the negatives they give and pills are easily found everywhere on the map. Nightstands have a very high chance for pills. As does the hospital
Focus on avoiding combat or try your luck with explosives until you are more familiar with the game. Found in the warehouse. and police station. And bought at the store in the south west corner of the map
You lose everything you are carrying on death, as well as any stat changes from baseline. Have +30% move speed? It's 0% now. Have -50% sight? It's 0% now.
It's a matter of learning the spawns, and avoiding combat early on. Abuse the fact that every time you die, you'll get 30 free bullets from the hallway plants. Learn good loot spots when you're fresh. I personally always loot kitchens, medical cabinets in bathrooms, bedside tables (seriously these are great) and the hospital if it's free. Free pills and fungus, as well as healing supplies/food in case of an emergency.
For weapons, loot any and all lockers you see. You can find some in shelves too, if you want to just take it slow and loot everything you see, though the chances are low. Most houses have a locker somewhere, some have multiple, such as the hotel. The police station is always an option, but it's usually crowded, and it puts you in a one way exit room for weapons, so understand it's a risk.
Prioritize Weapons > Blood > Cash in terms of loot. You'll need cash, especially later, but you'll rarely run out of it, assuming you don't die with 100k on you. If you must hold onto cash items, they should be high value, such as gold, or fountain pens.
Having a buddy does help, if for no other reason than it's one less person who is out to kill you.
Assume anyone and everyone you see wants to hunt you down and take your heart. Take no chances, make sure you always have at least 50-70% stamina, and have options for escape. Use enemy NPC's, spotted landmines, random grenade tosses, anything at all to buy you space to get away. Remember that breaking windows can be heard from further away than footsteps and walking, as well as eating, so be cautious when jumping through windows if you don't have a heartbeat.
tl;dr focus on stat increases, build up your blood storage, avoid shooting, don't get spotted, throw your buddy to their death so you can escape. Just make sure they know they're the meat shield.
First up: As the story goes on (particularly through the first week), you get access to new shops and amenities - a gun store, a bank, your own bullet plants, more storage in your apartment, etc. All of this helps make the game a lot easier. When you first start out, though, you have very limited access to equipment and other amenities, plus you don't fully know what you're doing yet. So, it's normal that you're having a hard time, and it will get easier just by playing the game. :)
As some others have stated, I would fully recommend trying not to get in fights at all if you can help it. The Control key (by default) lets you go into stealth mode, which makes you a lot quieter, though people can still smell you if they're close by. (If you hear a heartbeat, you can smell in the very near vacinity. Unfortunately, they probably smell you too.)
If you gotta run, I recommend just booking it and going through a few alleys, and you'll Probably outrun whoever's after you. If you want, you can also carry around a soda, alcohol, or another stamina booster and bind it to your "Q" key. (Hold Q to access a radial and pick what's on the quickslot.) A stamina booster will all but guarantee you get away from most fights, assuming your pursuer doesn't literally run faster than you.
... And on that note - look for things that can boost your run speed and/or stamina! Pills in bathrooms can help. Fungus found in the parks can help even more, but has side-effects. Usually still worth it, though. If you find a couple little things to boost your move speed a bit, I guarantee you'll get away from most pursuits.
Finally, I recommend taking a good long look at the map sometime while you're in your condo. If you're looking for something, you can often find it in a place that would logically make sense. For example: If you need healing supplies, you can check the hospital. Weapons can often be found at the police station, but it's a bit dangerous for that reason. Office supplies can be found in office buildings, and there's a big complex marked on your map. Use your head, and you'll save yourself a lot of flailing around at random, haha!
And as a last note: Try not to get too broken up over dying. Death is only an inconvenience in this game - even when you die, you can wring the blood out of your shirt when you wake up, so you till progress in terms of accumulating blood to water the bonsai. Just try to go with the flow, and keep in mind it DOES get easier as you move through the story and complete jobs.
I'm finding this as well. I've been chased down by people with a katana and maybe 120-150% speed, people with machine guns vs my basic pistol, even been shot at specifically by people *already getting killed by a monster*.
It's all very well saying "just don't pick fights, run away, be stealthy" but every player I've encountered seems to have wanted me dead.
Having a lot of fun so far, and the few escapes I've made have been very exhilarating. But yeah, repeated quick deaths can start to grind a bit.
sucks pretty bad if they can ohk you or at least get you in the first salvo always resetting you to the dumbass starter pistol
