Tigers on the Hunt [www.matrixgames.com] might be more what you're looking for if ASL is what you want.
Half true as V&V and ATS both started with SL/ASL as a base. Their art, counters, and boards are also very much the same. They just have a lot less tedious and easier systems to learn.
My dad and brother both played ASL and I am probably one of very few women in the world to have played and own physical copies of ASL and a few ATS games because of them.
Btw. Those OOB:s look more or less exactly like the ones from SL.
Hey I would be happy if it had Lt.Stahler :D. Cross of Iron remains a fond memory of my wargaming youth :).
My first computer was a ZX Spectrum. That is how long I have hoped for someone to do a computer version of SL. Nothing materialized, Vassal modules doesn't count and certainly not the abormination that was from Microprose. Combat Mission was great but no SL. So this could very well be the closest I will ever get to remaking that history.
I think the reason we never saw ASL, was that no one managed to find a good way to translate those very complex rules to something that would be fun on a PC. If I am not mistaken, even the creator of ASL was a bit put off by his game, the binder was bigger than some C++ manuals :D. We got "similar" games like CM, Steel Panthers etc etc.
Nevertheless. This looks like it will push all the right buttons, can't wait :).
