Is the dog okay?
This game sounds great but I don't want to buy it only to find out that I've bought a game where a dog is not okay. Can you definitely save the dog in this game? Spoiler me up, spoilers are less important than dogs being okay.

Relatedly: is the dog a good dog?

Yes, the dog is okay, but only if you save her.

And Dani is a very good girl indeed. She only jumpscared me once.

No problem. If you need help on how you get the good ending (with Dani) then tell me.

This is mostly for record keeping, but if anyone reads this topic, you have to go out of your way to have the dog-o die-o. I wasn't gonna play the game until I found out myself.

First you have to shoot your dog when you encounter her in the opening sewer RIGHT after you get a gun. Second you have to leave your dog at the very end instead of go through a gauntlet to get her back (you'll know when that is). Finally, you'll have to do VERY specific things to cause a hidden ending to happen (technically everyone dies in this ending, but still- doggie dies).

So all in all, as long as you play the game normally, you'll be fine. It's also a great horror game so far.

so the dog won't die unless you do this weird thing?

Yep! The game has five (four if we only count endings with achievements) endings. Here's what happens with your dog in each ending, and how you get the endings.

Good Ending - Play through normally, go through the Last Area rather than skip it, you will be reunited with Dani.
Bad Ending - Play through normally, but skip the Last Area, when the game says "you're just going to abandon your dog?" just go up the ladder anyway. Dani doesn't die but rather you just don't reunite with her and leave without her. I suppose technically she'd eventually starve though...
Very Bad Ending Play up until you get the damaged handgun in the sewer, then shoot at Dani's silhouette, this will kill her and the game will end there, still at the beginning of the game.
Nightmare Ending Pick up the Eyeless Body in Nezumi Testing, take the Child's Skull from the Siren's corpse after killing it on its third encounter, sacrifice the Child's Skull to Bayagototh in the Last Area, after you leave and go back to the surface, Bayagototh has started the apocalypse. I can only assume this is an "everybody dies" ending, and that would include Dani.
Other Ending (no achievement for this one) - Leave the sewer as soon as you enter it, just spam click the ladder until it lets you climb up it, thus abandoning Dani.

As such, if you do everything correctly Dani will be fine! When it comes down to it just don't skip over the final area of the game and you and Dani will be reunited!

From the kickstarter:

"During a bad storm your anxiety service dog is washed down a broken sewer drain. You find the nearest sewer entrance and run in after it. This journey is represented two ways; the literal crisis of rescuing your dog from the very environment you fear the most, and the psychological message of your service animal symbolizing your control over this irrational fear. The dog may not even exist, your subconscious, long exhausted by having to live with in daily fear could have created this entire situation in order to force you to face and overcome your fear. The interpretation of course is up to you."

So, the dog might not even exist.
