10/10 for me.
1) It's reviews by people who play the game more than a few minutes
2) It's reviews by people who understand the concept of a skateboarding sandbox/sim
3) It's reviews by the audience that has the capability of adding modifications to the game to improve it
Number 3 is the one I have the biggest gripe with. And I will say the game is kinda lackluster without custom content... definitely not $40 worth of game. But we're able to add stuff ourselves as we see fit. I feel a bit bad for the people stuck playing on consoles who don't have that capability... at least for now.
The reviewer also offers a better explanation why it's being praised on Steam:
Something he failed to cover though was the price, which I think is too steep. Perhaps he doesn't think so but since "light on content" is one of his negative points you would think value would make the topic too. Considering the kind of "skating for skating's sake" sandbox game this wants to be I think price really is its biggest issue but it's overlooked here. The game doesn't have a built in level editor and shared content system to fall back on either, unlike the similarly high priced (on release) and poorly received Mark McMorris Infinite Air.
I'm not a "true skater" (whatever that is!) and I like the game. Not everything is black or white.
I'm not even a fan of the Last of Us and ND created a dumpster fire of game with all that controversy over the ma'am stuff. I feel bad for the fans who invested time and grew to like the world and its characters.
They can shove it as far as I'm concerned. Skater XL isn't perfect, and no one here will claim it to be, but Skater XL is currently the best in terms of physics-based flip tricks. The level of board control is unmatched. We can't do darkslides, pressure flips, or caspers yet, but that may come in due time. That's why there are "fanboys" coming to "defend" the game.
All the complaints about the game are over no story, bad graphics, controlling with triggers, poor bail physics, stiff animations. It's never about what really matters; the skating itself. People completely miss the point of what this game is about. Sure, there are silly looking bails and the character is stiff as a board at times, this will be updated and fixed I'm sure. Perhaps the game is a 5/10 on everything else, but the mechanics of the skateboarding itself is a 8/10 or 9/10 at least.
You could perform 100 kickflips and each one would be slightly different. The game shines with its physics-based board manipulation. Because of this, it actually takes practice to make tricks look right. Over time, they look better and you'll get more consistent performing flip tricks. How fast you flick the analog sticks also determines the board flip speed and angular rotation.
It's fantastic stuff. No other skateboarding game does this right now, albeit Session is close. And from the looks of it, the devs are doing a physics overhaul on the game right now. Probably saw how good Skater XL was shaping up and they're looking to do something similar.
Give it time, the game will get better. Easy Day has a great foundation and can build upon this even further.
well, tbh, this stuff actually matters
as for a score i would say 8/10 for me. i need some more adjustments to miniramp skating, the copings dont work like i want em to. but i still get tricks done that i want. blunts and nosepicks feel satisfying when you do them cleanly. needs work in general but so far i like the game.
if you want to mod the game to make something that is more realistic than skate, this game is for you. if you want a skateboarding videogame. i suggest something like skate 2 or 3. maybe thps if thats what you like. btw if you want to play thps online today there is a mod called THUGPRO.

Oh this game is definitely a special game for special people alright
Ok so let's use your logic for a second.
You play fps games right? Are you a military personnel or a person that shoots people in real life all the time? How do u know the weapons in the games are realistic to real life?
Matter a fact. u shouldn't play those games since u have no experience with guns and weapons in the real world, nor does your opinion matters.
I always knew the skating community didn't always have the brightest ppl but....
These so called real "true skateboarders" must have fall on their heads on many times in the real world that their ability to critically think has disappeared.
