how can i use books?

you don't it just unlock nodess in the research tree once you have to book

pretty much... but if you put them in a box if a quest requires it you're going to have to put it back into your invertory to trigger the quest

I suspect you simply need to make the higher grade study bench. It is annoying requiring a bunch of slow lathe parts, but, it opens up a bunch of stuff.

correct. steel book requires research 2 bench. and you simply have it (book) in your inventory and sit in the new research chair. and that unlocks it.

Books are used automatically (i'm pretty sure they still work if in the common stockpile) but they make different researches available.

The only stipulation is that your research bench allows you to research it. (a research node that isn't all gray, but is grayed out means you have the book, but the last research bench you sat in isn't high enough level)

if you're having trouble unlocking the 3rd bench (you can't unlock the cnc machine for a quest) then do other characters missions. If you don't want to figure it out yourself then... Build the hydroponics farm for Monty. There might be another quest after that, but either way, the hydroponics quest is the "gatekeeper" for the late game.
