How do I get to the Barren Lands?

I need the recycling book and everyone says its in the Barren Lands but I don't know how to get there. Can anyone help?

You have to go deep into the game to get there. Past the factory entrance, through the glass house, into the tunnels and out the other side. if you haven't cleared the large boulder where you talked to the Gas Mask guy, you can't get there.
