Problem Tempering
I can not successfully temper a sword to save my life. I have watched videos of people putting it in the oil to temper it and the flame appears and you take it out as soon as the fire appears BUT I have never seen a flame during my tempering process no matter how many attempts or different temperatures I try it at.

Do you get any kind of visual or sound effects all?
It's been a little while, but I don't remember ever seeing flames on my settings either, but I did get smoke and a sort of sizzling sound.

i think i remember flames and once they went away take out the blade, but i have only done it once because the Tempering has been an issue for a while and my mine cart is stuck in the mines and wont come back up lol. but on my test account it's fine i even verified the files came out fine

There will be steam yes and some sizzling but there is no indication as to when to take it out to make it tempered. It even says in the training manual to take it out right after the flames stop but I have never seen any. Not sure whats going on, tried adjusting different visual settings but still never see any flame.

to all who read this, I've done this multiple times and yes you HAVE TO WAIT for the boiling sounds to go away before cooling the sword in the water, while the description is misleading the tutorial wont move on until you temper it correctly. I've had the same misunderstanding before i found this out

I hope this comment helps as tempering adds a HUUGE PRICE BOOST i messed up one of my blade segments and still sold a bronze sword for 265 when the entire sword set is 170

To Clarify cause i realize i wasn't specific after your done forging the sword and it takes its shape, you have to put it back in the furnace and heat it to its forging temperature which you can see my pressing escape and clicking metals then you bring it to the oil and put it in until the boiling sound stops happening then you bring it to cool inside the water, if you did it right a popup should happen saying the sword is tempered

Is it possible the lack of flames is an indication that the blade isn't hot enough?
As TANKER said, the blade needs to be glowing - doesn't have to be at the perfect forging temperature - just within the bottom range.

But the flames aren't your signal to pull the blade out. From the moment the sizzling sound stops, you have a bare second to get the blade out of the oil. You don't need to quench it in water - just pull it out as fast as possible.

I find it's faster swiping the sword to the side - left or right - than it is pulling the blade out vertically. Another thing I do is when I put the blade into the oil, I position it as closely as possible to the side of the container where I plan to remove it.

If you fail, you can keep trying. You just have to heat it up again.

There is no actual fire flame, what there is a lot of steam and sizzling, there is a sort of ''evaporation flame'' made of steam. As soon as that disappears and sizzling stops you need to take it out ASAP as if a second passes the tempering will fail.

I failed a couple of times in the begening but now once I got used to it I never fail to temper a sword. It's just until you get accustomed to it :)

Thanks everyone. Good to know to listen to the sound, rather than looking for a flame. Also good to know that we can reheat it and try again!

I see a flame and wait until it goes out for a good temper. I can only assume it's a graphics setting thing if you're not seeing it.

I can help you there. Take the hot sword and put it in the oil, wait until the flame desapier, DO NOT TAKE THE SWORD BEFORE. Then faster put it into the water. And that is all

Im sorry for posting this so long after but I ran into this issue too, I noticed that if I waited around like half a sec after the flame dissipated and the sound stopped that it would temper every time. So its not about taking it out immediately its about taking it out just a little later.

I was having a lot of problems until I started doing this. First heat the sword up to the top range of the forging temp. Then take the sword and hold it directly left of the quenching tank. Move the sword right into the tank. WATCH THE FLAMES ignore the sound, sometimes the sound stops before the flame and you can be tricked. AS SOON as the flames disappear move the sword left and out of the tank. Using this it works 9 out of 10 times.
