You can try this, i was having the same issues just making blades randomly and selling them.
What i did was wait until a customer comes to the door and asks for a specific type of blade at a specific price and you don't have it. So at that point you can either take a custom order or turn them away. What i found is that the same customer will eventually return asking for the same item. So what I did was not take a custom order because that puts you under pressure to get it done before they return to the door which is usually 20 minute.
So take note of what they want, turn them away and work on crafting that sword, finish and hang up in store and when they eventually return you will have the sword hanging on the wall. If that doesn't work you can do the same but when they return take the custom order for the blade you already made and then stick it in the wall holder labeled Custom orders and then wait for their return.
I just had a girl come to the door a couple times asking for a cheap blade under 350.I didn't have the sword so i turned her away and did not take custom order. I purchased the cheapest parts like Pine and iron for the handle which is no cost and made a bronze sword with no extras, no tempering. Put it on the wall and eventually she returned asking for the same item and i had it made. Some times they except the offer and then tell you they don't have the full amount to pay and offer you something else. Just take the item in exchange because it will be more then likely something you can use for magic casting on another sword. That girl i just sold the sword to ended up doing just that and i got a Lightning crystal.
I prefer not to sell via the trader unless I have to, as in I wasn't paying attention and messed up a blade.
