Arguably some builds are better than the others... though I believe everything is quite viable. Especially if you like a certain playstyle, you will make it work.
Except for one of the builds I tend to prioritize melee. Now you have to decide if it is melee + speed or melee + elemental, or a combination of melee / ranged. I believe there are mods for each.
Then I decide on shields/hp. In my experience, it seems a bit difficult when you want to go half and half. What works for me, maybe because of the playstyle, I either go for HP + nano to recover when in melee. Or I go shields + shield recover speed.
The build I use the most, I do not remember the exact mod names:
Melee dual + nano = healing while destroying
Speed engine = zoom in and out of the way + some mods for fuel consumption, so I can do it for a longer time ... It is 1000 acc and something like 200 consumption, I think less than 200
... So the mods are mainly focused on melee damage, speed, recovery. I think I have one for Quantum break, so it lasts longer.
Apart from melee weapons, I use detonator, homing missiles/shock dmg, and freeze floating zappies :D
So shock missiles get them weaker, I quickly charge in with a combo
If they are in a group, even better, I throw in few detonators into the mix
Zappies will freeze them from time to time, giving me more opportunities.
You should try a pure melee build and see if you like it. Here's mine:
Cast highmetal engine, Spartoi OS, Styxgear architecture. It comes with 3566 physical attack power and 17,794 shields. In the case that I run out of shields I use Quantum Break Armored Form to quickly regenerate and just face tank most things. I also use a Hammerfall M.A.S.S. for high base armor. Unequip all other weapons as you will not be using them.
If you like melee and ranged try this, it's a heat damage spec and uses Revenant architecture with Suncaller for extra heat damage and Wildfire Starter to get a devastating amount of burst from dual strikes. Switch all damage types to heat including weapons and missiles.
Then there's the extremely powerful Full Metal Jacket build, most powerful in the game perhaps - using the Anglerwasp architecture, Full Metal Jacket and Bullet Specialist Techs, Omnia OS to reduce fuel burn rate, and Melded Engine so you can take some hits. I sometimes with two shots destroy enemy M.A.S.S. units with spread shot and the gatling gun finishes off full health enemies in a matter of seconds. I also set the damage type of the floaters to shock to apply the weak status buff so enemies take even more damage.
Hammerfall is one of the armor-sets.
AFAIK the only thing that truly impacts your M.A.S.S. is the weight of armor. Hammerfall is one of if not the most heavy one. Other than the weight, armor has no stats attached.
And Hammerfall is a M.A.S.S. that makes you look like Juggernaut from X-Men.
