Ice mage can be a bit slow to start but once you get it rolling you can beat the game easily, it was the first class that I beat the game with after struggling with everything else
As for race it's definitely depending on the class that you play, gnome is great for both ranger/rogue as well as for most mage classes, melee classes struggle a bit with the low strength and HP but once you get fortitude you can patch that weakness, it's a glass cannon so anything ranged works well
same with Fairy that pairs great with Ro/Ra but struggles with melee
the mummy is amazing once you learn to read encounters but no pots definitely can make you struggle and misjudging an encounter makes it an auto loss sometimes
Going from my numbers I have a 4-0 on vampire rogue, there are a few others that I never lost but are at 1-0, since I won with human ice mage I won two times more in a row, my fairy rogue is 9-4 and at some point I went for all the badges so there are a few losses due to going fast, I don't think I've lost more than one or two games taking it slow and thinking it over
Rogue is up there too though.
Ranger doesn't have a reliable way to deal with incoming ranged damage without tomes/gear, and can become overwhelmed more easily vs other classes. I'd definitely recommend Rogue first to a newer player if they want to use a bow.
Gnome gets the the best racial bonus of +skill damage and by the time you get to the last boss you can kill him in 3-4 spells.
Though I probably wouldn't recommend a Gnome Storm Mage for a new player. They're the only mage without any pets or hp shield, so they can potentially get screwed by RNG and be too squishy.
