Jokes aside: what do you think sucks the most, accidentally hitting a fire pot and dying from the explosion or a shot from a enemy missing you, but hitting the pot and killing you?
But it's still one of those things that feels avoidable. Barring a pretty severe misclick, I have to deliberately position myself in such a way that if the pot goes off, I'll take the hit. It's sort of like hiding behind the explosive barrels in an FPS: there's always a risk that someone will set them off.
On the other hand, the game does not allow me to step on a Fireshroom, a Shock Reed, a Bear Trap, a cloud of hazardous gas, or a Fire Vent unless I go out of my way to hold down two buttons to do so. For that matter, I still have to hold down both of those buttons to touch a Shock Reed even when I'm flying (and therefore don't take any damage from it). Sure, it's my fault for clicking around too quickly without paying any attention, but when it's almost literally the only thing the game doesn't prompt a big warning for, yeah it's really irritating. At this point, I can only hypothesize that this feature hasn't been implemented because of some conflicting code issues about Fire Pots being flagged as enemies instead of obstacles (which would be supported by the way NPC buffs used to/sometimes still affect them).
I remember when shopkeepers and trainers actually had HP and spot chances listed when you hover your mouse over them, implying the coding saw them as enemies too, yet nothing was able to harm them
