Anyone having food problems?
I have no idea if I'm just getting extremely unlucky or what. But out of the 8 games I've played, 6 of them have been death by hunger. Only 1 game did I manage to rack up 3 pieces of meat and I had an awesome lightening cleave weapon, lots of armor, and I hit a fire pot, realized they were bombs, healed up from 2 health, and instinctively hit the next one a few tiles up like an idiot and died! lol

I've learned to save the food until my hunger literally hits 0, since it fills it up. I try to find a bunch of enemies so I can also use it for healing at the same time. I'm loving the game, but I have never had so much trouble with hunger before in a rogues (I do like it is an actual concern and not just a silly nuisance feature).

Anyone else experiencing this? It just seems way to random? A friend said he hasn't even realized the hunger and says he hasn't ended up dying from it. IS there something I'm missing here?

Thanks, enjoying this a lot and would like to get to the bottom of this!

EDIT: Also wanted to state I don't use the rest feature, since I think I noticed it takes 3 food.

If you're using it right, you should have no problems with food, as it is garanteed every few floors (won't say when as I feel that wouldn't be fair on others). Unless you're using a large race, those have problems with food.

I don't know how things are rebalanced from the web version to the Steam version, but in the web version food could still be pretty tight early on. While it is tempting to use it as a quick heal option, it is best left alone until one is absolutely starving, or it is eat or die. I'd even go so far to let the starvation damage take me down to half health before using one; typically when safely wandering around to explore the floor or get loot.

It usually wasn't until mid to late game where I'd have more food than I needed to stay alive; allowing me to run back to prevouis floors to hunt for trainers, magic tables, or left behind fountains. Or could safely use the Rest feature in some pretty tough areas.

I'm not surprised that people would have food problems, especially if it got rebalanced/adjusted, since it is supposed to be a pretty important aspect of the game. About the best I can suggest, if not doing it already, is to try to keep combat engagement short and not give the enemy a fair chance. There are quite a few envornmental factors you can leverage to not only make things go quick but also reduce the need to hit up healing items. And don't forget you can run back up stairs to use fountains. It uses up a bit of food to run back, but it could net you a full heal or better gear in the long run.

I don't believe anything changed from the web version regarding hunger, the only difference is the Ogre, as it's slow, meaning that they consume food roughly 66% faster (since it takes two turns to go diagonally instead of one).

Well thanks guys, I'm going to play a few rounds and see if this was just some bad luck. I have used the troll twice, one with orge, 1 with the guy who doesn't need to eat, and the rest with human I believe. I think I may just be taking my time too much.

Thanks for the feedback.

PS: What are your favorite's to play?

Update: So I played another 8 games and didn't once have food troubles. I am just going to say it was really bad luck before. I did notice a few games it was hidden behind a wall where if you weren't looking very close you wouldn't see the item sticking out (the sprite hides behind the wall). So I'm assuming I past up a few not realizing it.

Yeah I'm not sure what exactly changes as players get more experienced but it seems to be a common theme that people start off having constant food problems and then after awhile it becomes a very small issue. Much like you, I pretty much never have food problems in my runs, even in cases where I might need to rest more than normal.

Using one (or worse two) thing of meat for a panic heal, and/or doing unnecessary walking around will likely put new players into a bind for food. On top of the fact slow characters will require more movement actions and in turn more food.

Every run I do I start off not eating until absolutely necessary, often waiting until I'm starving and at around half HP before eating. It really slows down those quick travel movement, because each tick off damage stops the character very quickly; making me spam click a point on the mini map while also keeping an eye on my HP.

It might seem extreme, but it works. About half way into a run, I either have enough food to backtrack (and when I do, I occasionally use up distant healing fountains to put off eating), or at worst the merchant has some food I could buy.

An early haste effect or Ring of Sustenance all but takes care of the food issue, and negates most bad RNG rolls.
