Painting gallery is out of order... very confusing!

I finished the game a few days ago (loved it!!) and I found most of the paintings, but I want to go back and find the rest. I prefer to do this without a walkthrough because it takes the fun out of discovering them if I just look up their locations online (similar to looking up puzzle solutions).

However, the game does give hints so that you have some hope of finding them. On the painting gallery screen the line art that is drawn near the paintings gives some indication of what scene that painting can be found in. However, they aren't all in order!

I haven't gone through and found the ones that are out of order, but the interactive mini-game ones seem to be entirely out of order compared to the rest of the paintings. So, I just ran around a couple of scenes for like 30 minutes trying to figure out how they could possibly have a hidden painting because on the gallery screen the missing one was between two others that I had found. Then, I realized that some paintings I found (and knew exactly where they fit in relation to others) were all the way up at the top of the gallery, despite being found near the end of the game.

What is the reasoning behind doing this? It is very annoying to waste a bunch of time because the hints are given out of order.

Look for subtle arrows or partially obscured levers.
