The terrain qi in this game is really flowing. Qi gather items really gather/suck the qi from outside the qi gather range and increase qi within the range.
At the start of the game, the map has several points that generate qi. That qi flow out from those to other squares. qi gather items increase qi within the range of the items by sucking qi from outside the range.
For example the spirit wood. That item gather range is 4. So the spirit wood gather qi from surrounding area and distribute it to the squares within that range.
One way to combine is to put cushions within certain distance to each other so some of the qi gather items at max range will affect two or more cushions.
