Regular tribulations are weaker in an environment that suppresses them. So if it’s a fire tribulation I guess go stand in a lake, etc. Thats what I do. I think I could go further with Qi gathering items but it isn’t necessary. The tribulations you get from your laws are weak and a level 1 or 2 core should be absolutely fine.
The dangerous tribulations are paramount penalties and attainment. Fortunately you can choose how many of those to face.
I don’t think element types inherently hurt worse if they suppress yours but I could be wrong. I know that yaoguai and illuminated cultivators often have elemental weaknesses though.
1) Your defense skill has no ranks in it and you explode. Solution. Invest in your defense stat.
2. Your defense skill is good but your artifact regeneration multiplier sucks. The tribulation hits you and it bounces off, then your artifact attacks and uses up all its Qi. Your artifact returns and you refill it, draining yourself dry. Now when the tribulation strikes you, you have no Qi shield and you explode. Solution. Get a better artifact. Or invest high in defense, unequip your artifact, and just face-tank the entire tribulation. It will take forever but 20 ranks and a lot of Qi can rank a LOT of tribulation damage.
3. You passed your last attainment easily so you try another one and get smote. Solution: remember they double in strength each time, and the element changes. Be more careful.
4. You are a physical cultivator and you think you will be fine but you die. It isn’t obvious what went wrong. Solution: physical cultivation combat has a higher random factor. Don’t just do the minimum, exceed it. And be sure to use your berserk skill. It is hard to say why you died exactly because a lot is going on but if you went unconscious before dying the problem was your pain threshold. Upgrade your brain. If you just died outright upgrade your defenses. And always have good offense to just punch the cloud to death and end the tribulation fast.
5. You are a divine cultivator and blow yourself up because the rules are confusing and the tool tips are poorly translated. Solution: good luck.
