5 days for Qi to gather.
Work through walls if the material has a range beyond it but you are wasting one tile space for a possible placement of a Qi gathering material...
After this time you either reset the placement to try and give a short term boost to the Qi in the area or keep the items in place to avoid the Qi potentially leaving.
This works to a maximum range on the item.

Note: There is about a small penalty at max range for an item
I would not recommend the spirit wood surrounding the earth as I have found it lowers the base Qi in the area. Reset the placement a few times to give quick boosts to the base level of Qi and pay attention to the fengshui of the room.
When building your sect it is possible to boost the area Qi as well although this is much harder to do. If done correctly I have been able to have a base Qi level of over 1000 (almost everywhere in the sect) consistently however it is easy to lose this bonus and have to drop to around 300.
Note: There is a soft cap of 2500 Qi in an area any more requires a large amount of Qi gathering
Seat? You need to use a training spot or a cushion and you usually want to assign them to the cultivator you want to use it.
