As to tribulation it actually deals damage to your disciple, while in normal fights the artifact usually blocks enemies from attacking you directly, thats why efficiency of qi barrier was mentioned in context of tribulation.
If you're about to get into a fight, taking the Barrier pill can help enormously.
Also if you ever wondered why Beasts are tanky for their amount of Qi, they have more than ten times the barrier power of an average GC disciple.
I mean, they are specilized with combat artifact, can they deal with the tribulation fast enough ?
Depends on how good your artifact mastery, artifact quality, and other cultivation strength aspects are like qi sense, protection, and max qi.
