Yeah I've noticed that occur randomly sometime's and i'm not sure if it's an event or season change or the plant using up fertility or what. If you look under the same field planting menu there's a "fertile soil" option that uses poop to turn it back into fertile soil. Idk what you mean by "lost spirit soil patches" tho.

If it's still spirit soil, but has gone to poor- check your weather conditions. Otherwise, leave a corpse over the tile and it'll refresh the soil's fertile state. a Fertile/Fertile soil node is sufficient to grow a spirit root in; it doesn't need to be spirit soil.

They need access to more soil if you are getting bad soil messages. My first root had access to 5x5 and I had those messages all the time. I increased the room to around 7x7-8x8 and no more. Check the nearby soil, it will either say poor or healthy. The roots need space.

This is untrue. Had my roommate test it- a single tile of regular fertile soil directly under the plant, at fertile/fertile, is sufficient. You can have all the rest of the tiles other than its 3x3 tiled off, as well. It's a great use for the corpses you generate from a hellgate.

Perhaps with feeding the soil you can mitigate fertility decay but I know for a fact that my soil was not replenishing its fertility fast enough on its own in a 5x5 room but giving it a larger room meant it could access the soil further away. I could see in realtime my soil quality improve from the tooltip when I gave it a larger room.

I will concede my phrasing was incorrect and unclear, just that the root's roots can draw from soil farther away than 5x5 was what I was trying to say.
