It's only when the pet does honing, then it will increase that stat and drain the nutrition value. Not just by eating.
Train the pet to hone intellect as much as possible, it will train its INT. Of course, don't let it do other stuff too much,like feed crap to you, amusing disciples, or even hone other stats, etc and waste time. You should check its schedule list occasionally and adjust accordingly.
Actually, you don't "attack" at all if your inners are capable of defending the sect so your pet can focus on just growing up and honing itself.
Worst case (E.g Inners are out on adventures), manually issue the attack command for the pet. Don't automate the attack enemies into pet's schedule.
