I'm going to say that Astrox feels a bit more like EVE but somewhat more intuitive from what I remember about EVE.
X3 is a similar genre as Astrox but it's feel is different (I haven't played it in quite a while). I just remember it being much slower feeling than Astrox Imperium.
Astrox does allow you to have other ships (as mercenaries) but you don't have direct control over their behaviors, and they're not independently acting in other sectors. At this time there is also no station building or management, though it's my understanding that this is coming.
you CAN collect ships. you can fit them with weapons and upgrades, then dock them and fly another ship. you can own unlimited # of ships. you can fit them for different task (combat, mining, exploration).
Merc are different, you hire them, they fly with you. You CAN command them. you can set their targets. you can adjust the formations, and you can set them to auto task, where they will do their own thing.
Mercs are NOT like a RTS game where u band box and command like that.
storyline is coming.
I may have to give this a look. While I do have X3 stuff to still finish, and plan on playing X4 at some point (if they ever get the game functional), I think Astrox sounds interesting. Perhaps some youtube viewing/research is in order.
IMNSHO X3 is micromanagers in space.
Both Astrox games are similar to both of these games, but with the unnecessary extreme levels of detail removed. As has been said, they are "EVE Lite". I enjoyed EVE, especially in the early years, and I still love X3, but both Astrox games are games that I can take in as many chunks of any size I want to at a time. You can't really do that in EVE, and you get very little done in short gaming sessions playing X3 which is much more of an economic simulator that needs to run for a while to accomplish much.
EVE and Astrox are about grind, time waiting and building blueprints.
Star Citizen is about stealing money without a product.
Bitter? Salty?
Strange, I've been PLAYING Star Citizen for over a year now. It's almost like an early access game. Oh wait, another way it's like Astrox Imperium.
Hah! For me it was the other way around. I played Elite Dangerous until X4 came out.
