Merc payroll

Probably a silly question but is it a one-off price to hire a merc or do I have to pay this as a regular salary? And if so, how often do I have to pay?

Every hour, but it's not much if you're having them do things. The mining carrier you can hire at the starting station costs 1.8k but he can mine 25 times that in basic Adamyte ore before the timer ticks once.

This is a regular payout, but if you get the merc to a high level with 100% loyalty they may offer to work for free. I am not sure of the exact time of the payday but I want to say once every 5 minutes. If you find that a merc is draining your resources too fast simply go into the pilot info panel and select fleet, where you can retire the selected merc.

The mercs, especially the miners in the early game, are worth their payroll in hamburgers and exotic turrets. They basically allow you to skip the first few hours of grinding if you are a space miner. I can't tell how well they do in combat early on.

Just click the mercs button again and it should shuffle the required factions. The faction you picked at the beginning will come up eventually.
