Here's the gist of what we know:
  1. Intercept Games, the studio making KSP 2 will close five weeks from now, as part of a cost-cutting exercise. There is still some development activity going on at this time.
  2. All engagement with players who bought the early access game has ended. There is complete radio silence from the developers and the publishers.
  3. One statement on social media asserted that Private Division will continue to provide "updates" for KSP 2. There has been no confirmation of what is meant by "updates". In fact, Take-Two, Private Division, and Intercept Game make a point of saying the can't or won't say more. Private Division is a publishing label, not a development studio.

Strictly speaking, all we know is that the game is in limbo. However, many have come to the reasonable conclusion that these are not the actions of organisations committed to a prosperous future for this game, and that development will end or grind to a near halt. That implies the roadmap will be cut short. In your words, that it's "dead".

They could move the game to a new studio. But getting a development team to become familiar with a new project and seven years of buggy code is going to take more time and resources. The point of the closing Intercept Games was to reduce costs and staff. So that seems like a dubious proposition.

They could release the colonies update and end the roadmap there. Past experience would suggest that such a release would come with a whole range of new bugs, and some recurring old ones. Past experience also suggests that Private Division has no qualms about a buggy release. But if development is going to end, the early access label would no longer apply.

They could release some further bug fixes and end early access to release the game at the for science update point. But what would be the point of such game. Yes, it sounds a lot nicer than KSP 1 and it looks perhaps a bit better. But it has fewer features and is less moddable. They'd leave the game on Steam with all the negative reviews and a forum for people to vent on, and for the publisher to ignore. In other words, that possible future would look a lot like what we've seen in the past month, except with a lower asking price.

They could remove the game from Steam. But that would be a drastic action that could even lead to refunds. I think this is unlikely.

They could keep doing what they're doing now, retaining the game in early access while ignoring the community, but reduce the update pace from a trickle to drip. It's anyone's guess how long that would be permitted by Steam.

I don't think anyone knows for sure at this time but IMO it is dead.

Nothing official, but it's not looking good.

It will be official in June. That is, in June, we'll probably know if they officialize the end of the KSP2 project, or if they'll still pretend to work on it with a new team (continue it or restart it).
If anybody was still working there, they would tell us that the rumors are wrong.

It is in coma in the emergency room. Doctors and relatives are discussing if they should switch off the machines

You know, there is still people who believe than the pyramids were made by aliens. So ... don't be surprise if you find people still defending this game after all the closure and layoffs.

It's not gone officially (it never will be, there is no reason to announce it), but those that can read between the lines know it's gone.

Update I guess?
Doubt we'll get more than we got though

the june date is a technicality based on the applicable law. likely just about everyone was done work as soon as the layoffs were announced.

they probably won't officially cancel it, at least not in the near future. it may recieve a final patch and be declared 1.0, or maybe they'll say development is ~paused, with it being quietly dropped some time later.

They can't stamp a 1.0 and call it done when there is a roadmap with a ton of stuff not in the game.

They can't dodge this in this magnitude. Steam would need to intervene and allow refunds for everyone, which would be desirable.

Don't expect mercy from Take Two. They do have the cash to refund everybody, that's for sure.

Weird, that’s the same thing people said about Spacebase DF-9. Having a road map isn’t a promise of a future state of the game; it is a roadmap for their goals. Valve isn’t giving you a refund. Move on and quit huffing on the hopeium canister so hard.
