Plus, the creator of KSP1 says he's about to start working on some KSP-like game, or at least a space-related game in the vein of his current RC planes construction game...

Well, KSP and Juno are the "only games in town" when it comes to rocket building games that are a) not in eternal EA b) not a scam
There are games in same venue - thematically speaking - An older game, Buzz Aldrin's Space Program Manager from 2014 is very good. You have Mars Horizon, maybe Next Space Rebels. But none of these games are rocket building games strictly speaking....
There really isn't a rocket sim with an actual game attached. Just the sandbox stuff we get in KSP and Juno. There are "space sims" like Elite etc. There are a couple space agency management games. But nothing that combines a rocket sim with real progression and a story and the other parts of a real game. Mores the pity.
