First paragraph of Wikipedia article lays it out:
This "alpha-test" quality level release is not anticipated to ever receive any updates, unless the buyer of the KSP intellectual property (Annapurna interactive) elect to take a stab at it. They, however, have a lot on their plate at the moment, and aren't exactly the strongest of studios.
The real problem is, Take Two Interactive lied to everyone about the whole situation.
Save your money. While this game isn't dead, it's unlikely to be developed to a fully playable state as depicted in the "roadmap" on the store page in any reasonable time frame.
It is only superior when it comes to music and sound design.
KSP2 also features better graphics but KSP1 with mods isn't far behind.
Thus better play KSP1 and ignore this title.
Especially with mods KSP1 offers the much better experience.
I dunno, there are already people doing modding so that should answer that question, but the thing is, why buy KSP2 and mod it to be good, when you can get KSP1 for cheaper and feature complete, and mod that instead? Much more popular too.
when you say popular you mean what? :) Both games lost so much after the ksp disaster. Ksp 2 completely died, while ksp 1 is just dead. Harsh as it sounds you cant say its popular, its just less of a dead disaster than ksp 2 is. KSP in general is dead for most people, only few enthusiast remain until KSA comes out
3000 concurrent player peak vs 158, KSP1 compared to KSP2.
I guess compared to things like Fortnite, yeah 3k is "dead", but tbh it's still a considerable amount of people. To the question, it makes very little sense to invest into modding KSP2 when you could do that with KSP1.
KSP2 however,... now that is dead. The only people playing it now are the 158 hopium addled minds that overdosed inhaling a a massive 200 cubic feet of hopium tank all in one go last May and they are still trying to see if they can build a colony on the mun.
Why? Because as everyone knows T2 screwed us and killed the franchise.
(And now I'll probably never buy another T2 title again out of spite, because I love my lil green kerbalnauts, kittens are *** and hokey, and I'm waiting to see where another game ends up.)
It's been sold to some investment company who will probably do jack with it as so many software / IP sales go, including many of my past favorites.
This means I'll never see any of the promised content which for god knows why, is still being sold as in in dev alpha on steam.. Also means no more updates for KSP1, which, fortunately, is mostly bug free but still often problematic - still incredible hours of fun... and I've been going in and out of ksp1 since That one was in alpha.. including the demo version lol
