Space Flight Simulator 2 is another up and comer which may fill the void, but with less no hello kitty. There's also Juno Origins but I was woefully unimpressed.
As the first poster said, T2 screwed us, shut down, then sold the studio (private division), murdered the franchise because after horrible project management, they didn't get a bajillion dollars overnight like they thought they would. Some investment firm has it now and steam still sells this as an alpha.
Go KSP1, it's mostly problem free and I've found unlimited replayability with it. It's just perfection, especially with Graphics mods and such. Look up CKAN for easy modding.
I like space, and rockets, but the silly aspect of KSP is really what sells the genre for me.
